Members of the Islamic Center of Elizabethtown gave free pizza coupons Saturday to the community as a way to help during the COVID-19 crisis.
“Some of the members of the Islamic Center were discussing how we can assist our dear neighbors during this pandemic,” Imam Talha Vaid said. “The idea of a 1000 pizza giveaway came up.”
He said Papa Johns gave them a great discount on the pizza for the giveaway.
Because they are giving away coupons, the center is not limited to when they can give away pizzas and the recipients can order whenever it’s convenient for them, Vaid said.
“The Islamic traditions tell us that you cannot have ideal faith until you love for others what you love for yourself,” he said.
This is why their goal is to help others, Vaid said.
Earlier, 600 coupons were given to school resource centers in charge of distributing meals to students in need.
“We also treated the members of E’town police station and the staff of Hardin Memorial Hospital to a pizza meal,” he said.
On Saturday, a tent was set up outside of the Islamic Center to give away coupons for free pizzas. Volunteers were on hand to give visitors the coupons so they didn’t have to exit their car.
As cars drove up to the tent they were greeted with a smile and a coupon for a free pizza from the Islamic Center volunteers.
The goal was to give away 250 coupons Saturday.
